The Abundance Ball

“We have everything we need.”

6:00PM - 9:00PM · SOUTH SHORE CULTURAL CENTER · CHICAGO, IL
OUR INSPIRATION

The rent party tradition.

In 1920s Harlem, when banks redlined Black neighborhoods and landlords doubled the rent, our people threw parties. Guests paid a small fee at the door. Inside there was jazz, fried fish, dancing until dawn, and enough money raised by morning to keep another family in their home.

Rent parties were never just about rent. They were a refusal — a way of saying that even in scarcity, we have music, we have food, we have each other. They were blueprints for mutual aid that built the Harlem Renaissance and shaped every Black cultural movement since.

We gather in that lineage this fall.

WHY WE GATHER

From their parlors to our birth suites.

The future Chicago South Side Birth Center is the same act of collective care, in a new century. Every ticket, every sponsorship, every table reserved builds a place where Black birthing people and babies are met with reverence, expertise, and joy.

YOUR IMPACT

Every seat builds a birth room.

Proceeds from The Abundance Ball directly fund the opening of the Chicago South Side Birth Center in 2027 — the first freestanding, Black-led birth center on Chicago’s South Side.

That means birth rooms with light and dignity. Midwives who look like the families they serve. Lactation, postpartum, and mental health support woven through every visit. A community space that South Side families have built for ourselves.

We as a community have everything we need. We just have to show up.
